Request for help: Novell BrainShare 2010 Advisory Board

Novell BrainShare 2010
Planning for Continued Success

PURPOSE OF ADVISORY BOARD
With the cancelation of Novell BrainShare 2009 comes a unique opportunity to take a step back and evaluate the conference in its entirety. The opportunities to bring BrainShare back in 2010 are endless. With basically a clean slate, the Advisory Board can have a positive effect on the BrainShare conference going forward. Several options exist:
1). Plan and execute BrainShare in 2010 based on its history and success - status quo
2). Plan and execute BrainShare in 2010 based on its history and success, but in a different city
3). Recreate the BrainShare experience - all new event!
Novell is seeking a group of individuals who would like to be a part of the Advisory Board. This group will operate under NDA and on a very tight timeline - decisions must be finalized by June 19, 2009.

ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS
While the Advisory Board will be expected to function as a unified team, we will need members with focus and/or experience in the following areas:
· Content / Technical Sessions
· Keynotes
· Marketing and Audience Acquisition
· Budget
· Technology Lab
· Partners / Exhibitors / Sponsorships
· Event Technology (Registration, Social Networking (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.), etc.)
· Extracurricular Activities (Daytime and Evening Events or Activities)

EXPECTATIONS
Once formed, the Advisory Board will quickly create a plan and proposal for Novell Executives for BrainShare 2010. As mentioned above, we have a clean slate to begin with. All suggestions will be considered. A private Facebook Group (or similar site) will be created so that members can share ideas, thoughts, etc. and allow us to make decisions in real-time. Advisory Board members will be expected to join at least one or two online meetings.

REWARDS FOR PARTICIPATION
Advisory Board members will be given free conference registration plus hotel accommodations to BrainShare 2010. Public acknowledgement/credit will be given on www.novell.com/brainshare.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
If you are interested in joining the BrainShare 2010 Advisory Board, please complete the Application Form found at http://tinyurl.com/cl2ecx by April 30, 2009. If you have questions feel free to contact Mike Morgan at mmorgan@novell.com.

Cheers,

- Mike Morgan - Director, Novell Corporate Events

Training Tips from the Experts

You’ve poured lots of time, money, and resources into building a top-notch team. You’ve sought out and hired highly qualified candidates with loads of potential. You’ve provided them with the resources they need to hit the ground running. Now what?

Contrary to popular belief, employee training isn’t a one-time-only event. Although orientation training is a crucial part of the process of bringing your recent hires up to speed, training should also play a key role in ongoing employee development. In order to ensure that your team members remain at the very top of their games, you’ve simply got to make training a long-term priority in your organization.

One more thing to consider: not all employee training is equally effective. Spending a couple of hours mumbling your way through a vague and outdated training manual is not a good investment of anybody’s time. In order to get the very most out of the time you dedicate to employee training, you’ve got to train yourself to be an effective teacher.

Not sure how to devise training methods that will resonate with your team? Looking for ways to liven up and refresh your standard training sessions? Use these tips from leading industry experts to step up your training game.

Cultivate a culture of learning in your organization. When managers dread training, it’s likely that everyone will follow your lead and regard training as a chore to put off and avoid rather than an opportunity for professional growth. Make a point of framing your training exercises as positive and beneficial, and try to recruit candidates who are curious and espouse a lifetime love of learning.

Focus on what’s important. To maximize the efficacy of your training programs, narrow your focus to emphasize only those skills and concepts that are of central importance to your organization. Find out what it is that’s holding your team back and then address it with practical and memorable tips and how-to’s.

Elicit feedback. After you’ve completed a training session, ask the employees who participated to assess the efficacy of the program. A brief, informal survey conducted in two parts—the first immediately after the session has ended and the second several weeks later—will help you get a handle on how well your staff was able to comprehend and implement the concepts presented in the training session.

Measure progress. If you’re really serious about making the most of your employee training program, take steps to determine whether your employees are benefiting from the sessions that they’ve participated in. Look for a business metric that is closely linked to each session’s topic, such as the number of sales closed each month, and track it before, during, and after a related training session. If you don’t notice a significant change in the weeks and months after the program, it may be time to go back to the drawing board and revise your training methodology.

Is training a top priority at your firm? What are your favorite training tips? Talk back in the comments.

Heads Up: Novell Communities Getting a Facelift

As you can see, the refreshed Novell Communities site is here and we are fine-tuning it right now. Thank you for your patience!

Content has been designed to be the most prominent thing on the pages with
navigation and other resources secondary.

On index pages, we bring forward relevant information about articles to
stimulate participation. For example, we show the number of times the
article was read and number of comments on the initial page, helping you know right away what the community is reading and buzzing about.

We now expose the underlying taxonomy to allow you to further
filter/refine your experience and encourage you to explore topics you find interesting.

We added a tag cloud to give a visual depiction of the most popular content.

   And much more

Begging your Pardon in Advance

Because of the nature of Drupal (the tool we use for this community), it will take a few hours to get everything fine-tuned after we apply the new skins to the site. So... if you see some wonky stuff on the day we launch, please rest assured that we see it too, and are working like madmen to get it all tweaked.

Hope you enjoy the new look! And thank you in advance for your patience when we strip down and suit back up.

Novell Announces new Teaming + Conferencing Training Course!

Novell Teaming + Conferencing allows for social networking within your enterprise, where subject matter experts are easily identified and where new team workspaces can be easily formed, making teamwork and knowledge sharing a built-in workgroup feature.

By studying Novell Technical Training (NTT) - Novell Teaming + Conferencing Administration (Course 8002), you will be able to confidently install and manage Novell Teaming + Conferencing within your enterprise, making it a collaborative workspace everyone can utilize and enjoy.

During this course you will learn to accomplish the following tasks:

Implement Novell Teaming + Conferencing in your organization

Install Teaming + Conferencing on Linux and Windows

Manage a Teaming + Conferencing server

Integrate Teaming + Conferencing with Novell eDirectory or Microsoft Active Directory

Testing Formats and Theory

Novell offers two basic formats of exams: Practicum Tests and Traditional Tests.

Practicum Tests
The Novell Practicum, is designed to be extremely rigorous. It tests your working skills, not just your testing skills. The biggest problem in the industry is a shortage of skilled IT professionals. Bottom line is that employers are looking for individuals with experience, knowledge, and proven IT skills. Employees, and potential employees, need a way to prove that they are the best at what they do.

Traditional Tests
Traditional tests typically contain 60-70 test items and deliver the same set of questions to every test taker, regardless of the test taker's level of knowledge or proficiency. Your score on a traditional test depends on the number of questions you answer correctly. If you know a great deal about a topic, you can expect to answer more questions correctly than someone who knows less. Traditional tests have a long history and have proven very useful.

For a complete lists of Novell exams and an explanation of test formats and other information visit the Novell Test Information page. http://www.novell.com/training/testinfo/testdata.h...
