Help needed: PHP rrdtool extension

I spent yesterday afternoon and most of the evening trying to get the PHP rrdtool extension working on SLES 10 SP1 to no avail. While I could compile the extension, when I added it to the appropriate directory and configured the php.ini file it just didn't seem to pick it up....
