SUSE Linux Enterprise uniquely offers outstanding performance in both physical and virtual deployments. It is the global leader in supercomputing due to its scalability and raw performance. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server now powers seven of the top ten supercomputers in the world, according to the TOP500 list. It also provides excellent performance as a guest operating system in virtual deployments. In a recent Network World lab test, it achieved 6 to 15 percent better performance than Windows Server 2008 as a guest on VMware ESX Server.
In addition, SUSE Linux Enterprise significantly lowers costs and reduces complexity for organizations that deploy it on the server and desktop. With a common codebase and common management tools that automate deployment and administration, SUSE Linux Enterprise offers a low cost of ownership from acquisition through ongoing management.
Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu. The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) is the technology procurement organization for the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Its main objective is to offer the best possible IT solutions at the lowest price—maximizing the return on investment of public money. When the state's aging fleet of PCs in its schools became too old, ELCOT faced a choice of whether or not to move to a new desktop operating system. It considered a move to Windows Vista but could not justify the expense. ELCOT first deployed SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop for its in-house PCs, and was impressed by the high-performance, intuitive desktop environment with excellent stability and security. Based on this successful experience, ELCOT rolled out SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop to 30,000 students and deployed SUSE Linux Enterprise Server on almost 2,000 servers.
"With SUSE Linux Enterprise, we no longer have any worries about viruses," said C. Umashankar, Managing Director of ELCOT. "SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop is a very attractive and user-friendly desktop environment. More important, even non-technical users can install and set it up. We estimate that moving to Linux has reduced our general hardware costs by nearly 25 percent. In the case of high-end servers, the savings could be as much as 80 percent."
